Update on Quiet Car Legislation
This press release informs us that Rep. Don Young Joins the American Council of the Blind in Supporting the Safety of Blind Pedestrians.
The issue of safety is explained in the press release as…
Traffic sounds provide information about such things as the position of vehicles, their direction of travel, and the speed at which they are likely to move. With this information, the pedestrian can make informed decisions about when to cross a street or other vehicular ways safely.
Unfortunately, Hybrids or quiet cars, as they are referred to within the visually impaired and blind community, present a danger to this very technique for crossing.
The bill HR-5734 currently in Congress needs additional sponsors.
ACB President Mitch Pomerantz is quoted in this release saying…
This issue is one that the entire blindness community is united in supporting. I urge ACB membership to contact their members of Congress to ask them to co-sponsor this legislation, as this is an opportunity to bring real change and make blind pedestrians’ lives safer.
The only thing I would add is anyone interested in safety and accessibility, not only those of us who are visually impaired or blind, should contact there state representative.
You can get specific contact information by going to the U.S. House of Representative’s.
