My name is jim Lockwood. I have read some of these comments on this post, and really don’t do a lot of posting of my own. I am currently a student at the university of Notre dame law school. i am completely blind an use a guide dog and all that. i would be happy to talk to anyone about how i adapt in everyday life, just email me at the address provided below. anyways, when I learned about the court ruling, ordering the paper currency be made accessible, it was quite pleased. It is fundamentally unfair and a depredation of my liberty as an American, not to be able to have the ability to determine which denomination of bills I hold in my hand. As an American, I pay taxes and contribute to this great society of ours just as much as any sited person does. I understand of course that absolute equality will never come about. However, this is a much needed decision. I watched some of the congressional hearings in which our congressmen were attempting to figure out how to make the bills accessible. They discussed micro holes. Bad idea. The money will rip. Additionally, you can’t make different denomination of bills all different sizes because everything from ATM machines to wallets are all designed with the standard bill size in mind. It will not change. As if I was not in law school at the time I would have been in Washington myself, telling them how to do it because it is so simple. Perhaps someone will read this and pass it along. All you need to do is have one corner of each denomination, cut in a different manner. Thus, lets say on every bill, the left corner will be a different shape. For the one it will remain a right angle. For the five, perhaps it is cut diagonally and thus it would not go to a right angle point like it currently does. For the ten, perhaps we could have a rounded corner. Keep going like this and it is so easy. Wont effect vending machines. You might say, well people will have to learn what the corners mean. That’s true. But blind people have to learn brail right? Im sure all blind people use tricks like this to conduct their everyday lives. I know I do. Anyways, if anyone wishes to get in contact with me, feel free to do so. My email address is jimmylockwood@gmail.com
p.s. that is not the email address which I use for everyday stuff, so if you are a spammer, don’t bother lol. Your waisting your time.
thanks for reading.

Thank you for your overview. This week, I attended the DC Disability Forum in which Senator Grassley spoke. As always he leads the way of disability accessibility and is personally championing the ADA Restoration. Senator Grassley is looking for other Senators that will take up the challenge. Would love to have a joint discussion with you at the Senator's local office on this issue. I can be reached at:

As disapointed as I said I was about the Pocono Record article, I was please to see a response in yesterdays paper. A letter to the Editor was written by Roy B., of Saylorsburg. He was disturbed by the "deplorable ways" the sighted treat the blind. He supports our bid to change the U.S. Currency. He also asked what other ways that the sighted could help. Thanks Roy!

I was very disapointed to see that the newspaper took the sensationalism route instead of writing about our issues. We have been in business for just over a year (Dec. 2005), but we have made great strides in this short amount of time. What an honor for us to be chosen to send two delegates to Washington D.C.! Two out of the whole state! Wahooo! We have created our Vision Loss and Support Hotline, which is continually growing as word spreads about it. We have been talking to our local communities about obtaining audible pedestrian signals at key intersections and spreading the word about the white cane laws. Our Education and Awareness Team goes out and speaks to Corporations, Hospitals, etc. dispelling the myths about the Blind and Low Vision people they may come in contact with. We are concerned about, and fighting for, Currency changes as well as hybrid cars - we can't see them, or hear them. Not too bad for a group that started up with 8 people and grew to 30 in a years time. The exciting part of this is that we've only just begun.
